Soft sided waterbeds were introduced to provide more convenience. They are made to the same dimensions as standard beds allowing any furniture to be used with them. Your waterbeds base can be made to any height. At no extra cost. Various colours are available as well.
The water mattress sits in a frame made of foam and as foam is soft and spongy and stretches easily. It takes good design and selection of materials to make a bed that holds it shape for many years.
Some beds have hard foam but lack the comfort of those made with softer foam. Those made with softer foam glued on to a base sheet of foam stretch over time. Causing the depth to reduce as the mattress stretches. Then fabric is glued to the base of the foam to prevent this. Which works for a time till the glues loosens and the frame expands.
The frames I use have medium density foam sides for better contouring which is then glued and sewn along both the inner and outer base edges to a nylon reinforced sheet. For maximum comfort and long life. Soft sided beds have 8 inch deep frames with the mattress filled to about 7 inches. 2 inches shallower than the hard sided bed. I consider them a mid fill bed. Depending on body shape, We sink in to the bed around 3-4 inches. In a Shallow fill bed there is minimal support from water as most of your body rests on foam .
